More from Prince Rupert...

Driving around the streets of PR you can see how old the buildings are.  Although the city to me looks frozen in time, there are some efforts to improve the overall look of the area.  Many buildings have added Murals.  Here are some that we came across in the downtown area.

Tomorrow I will share the last of the pictures from Prince Rupert.
We are leaving town today and heading back to Fort Telkwa for
the night.  Looking forward to our spot looking over the river.

Like time has stood still...

Yesterday morning, after breakfast we decided to drive around my old neighborhood and take pictures.  I had no problem finding my way around so not many of the roads have changed in 46 years.  What surprised me the most is how short the streets are LOL.  First thing - my old house.  I lived here until I was 10.  The house itself looks the same but the landscape around it is different.
A couple of blocks away, is this hall.  It looks like it's seen
better days for sure.  I believe this is where my brothers used
to go to Cubs and Scout meetings and my Dad was a Leader.
There was a guy trimming back the shrubs and he told me it is
know as McLean Hall - owed by the McLean family for ever.
We continued to drive around and headed down into Seal Cove.
The old apartments are still there but the base area is mostly sea
planes and helicopter offices.  It doesn't look different - just older.
We drove around to look at my old elementary school.  I knew
it had been boarded up years ago but it was strange to see it.
We lived a few blocks up behind it so we had to go down and
 up these stairs everyday.
Here is the school - Seal Cove Elementary.  It looks
longer than I remember. I went here till the end of grade 4.

I remember walking from my house up to a corner store.
It seemed like 20 blocks as a child but in reality, it is probably
about 6.  The store is now just a vacant space with mail boxes.
Near the store - we used to go to a park with a playground. I
remember it as "Casey Park".  It is still there but not much to it.
The school I went to for Choir practice is gone - big empty lot.
The high school my brother went to is gone.  The hospital where
I was born is gone.  What really surprises me is all the old houses.
It's like time has stood still.  The same houses are there, the same
roads are there.  Everything just looks old and run down.

Final destination - PRINCE RUPERT!

We pulled out of Fort Telkwa in the pouring rain about 8:15 yesterday.  That is the first rain we've had and it had rained all night.  It was really good for the truck and trailer to get a wash because they had quite a collection of dead bugs... YUK!  Anyway - by the time we had gone about 20 miles the rain had stopped.  We drove through a little place called New Hazelton.
This was in another Native community called Kitwanga.
Also, right at Kitwanga is where you can take Hwy 37
north to Stewart and Hyder Alaska.
After a while, we needed a break.  Too much driving really cramps
up your legs so it's nice to get out and walk around.  This is a nice
Rest Area we found with washrooms and even a sign telling you
how to stretch all the kinks out.

More road construction.  They are doing a good job,
we have found that the roads are really quite good.
This is between Terrace and P. Rupert.  This is what I remember.
Now this is interesting.  The highway goes around this tower
which holds the main power lines but many many years ago the
road used to go right through the tower.  I've included a photo
I found of how it used to be.

Clearing the roadside trees etc. to avoid wild fires.
We Made It!  Finally - Prince Rupert.

A nice relaxing drive today.

So here are photos of the RV and the registration office as we are ready to leave Blue Cedars RV Resort in PG.  Some of the trailers around us were very run down with permanent residents and it was quite muddy in our area.  I don't think we would stay here again.  It was a quiet night and we were up and out just after 8am.

Our first stop was in Vanderhoof for another Row X Row pattern.
This Quilter's Corner was inside the Vanderhoof Department Store.
Along this highway from Prince George to Prince Rupert - there
are lots of lakes.  I think fishing in this area must be quite popular.
One of the little towns we went through was Fraser Lake.
We still have a long way to go to get to Prince Rupert.
More road construction.  I guess it keeps the locals employed.
We have driven through many areas with different Native Bands.
This is one of many Grave Yards that are common along the road.
Another interesting piece of "Yard Art".  A Blue Moose!
Time for another Quilt Shop.  This little shop is in Burns Lake
and has yarn and sewing supplies.   Very nice friendly staff.
Reminders of Days gone by...
We went through a town called Houston.  It is well know for
Steelhead Salmon fishing.  A beautiful park along the highway.
World's Largest Fly Fishing Rod...  or so they claim.
We arrived at our destination just south of Smithers.  This
is the Fort Telkwa RV Park.  We backed into a beautiful
site which looks over the river.  Love this place.

I took this picture while sitting in the RV.  What a great
view and is so nice to sit and listen to the river running by.
Tomorrow - we will be in Prince Rupert!

A long day on the road...

We usually like to be on the road for only 5-6 hours a day so yesterday was a long one for us.  We left Sunshine Valley at 8am and didn't actually park the rig until 5pm.  We had quite a few stops along the way so it wasn't really too bad.  We have decided that our truck, likes to play mind games with us.  Lights come one and go off all by them selves.  The AC/Heating system stopped working and then after a stop for lunch - started again.

Anyway, I took some pictures along the way so thought I'd share them.  There are many tunnels in the Fraser Canyon that you drive through - this one is called "Saddle Rock".
Yes - you guessed it.  Summer means Construction areas
and we went through many of these.

The river is beautiful and the highway winds
close to it at many different times.
A very old Church in Spences Bridge.
You never know what you will see on the road...
When you need to stop for groceries...
You take up many parking spaces!
Now - because I am a quilter - I need to stop at Quilt Shops!  This is
Ibea's in William's Lake.   I am collecting the free patterns for the
Row X Row Experience.
Beautiful wall mural in William's Lake.
An old leftover "Beehive" along the roadside.
Another Quilt Shop - R&R Sewing Centre in Quesnel.
YES - they had a free RXR pattern.
Our stop for the night was planned for 10 Mile Lake
Provincial Campground just north of Quesnel.
After driving through the campground, we realized that
non of the sites would accommodate our Big Rig so we moved on.
Guess where we ended up?  Yup - Prince George.
We pulled into Blue Cedars Rv Park and they were only able to put
us in an overflow site in the back 40.  Not much to look at but
it did have power/water/cable/wifi.  Will take photo as we leave.
